Girls’ Brigade has transformed my life in so many ways through fellowship, fun and faith.
My journey with GB began when I was 4 years old, in the 1st Shotts company, where I made some great friends and enjoyed all the fun crafts, games, songs and activities we got to learn. The skills I gained through leadership training and undertaking the Queen’s Award have allowed me to become confident in my own abilities and helped me get to where I am today.
One of the main things I love about GB is that it is an international organization and we have a great community in sharing with others all over the world. I have had countless opportunities to connect with others in GB all over the world. Attending events such as the International Council of GB in Perth, Australia, and European Fellowship AGM weekends gave me an insight into how GB works in other countries and also led to some great friendships developing.
One of the key highlights in my GB life was visiting Boys’ and Girls’ Brigade in Kenya. The young leaders that we met were so passionate about their faith and the work they do through the church, and were a real encouragement to me. The children that were part of the Brigade were so enthusiastic and loved being part of the organisation.
As part of a GB Europe project I was also able to attend History Makers, a Christian leadership course. The course allowed me to become more confident in talking about my faith with others and the attributes a Christian leader should try to have.
The friendships I have made through GB have always been a great blessing in my life, and through the organisation I get to meet new people all the time. My GB journey continues to this day, where I am now a Commissioned Officer in the 10th Dundee company, Deputy Commissioner and QA coordinator in Tayside Division and a National Executive member. The experiences I have been given through GB have been a great asset in my life and I hope that the same opportunities can be available for girls and young women across Scotland today and in the future.
